With abortion being a major topic of conversation following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, YouTube is enforcing a new set of rules to ensure its platform is providing the most accurate information surrounding the issue. In a recent announcement, YouTube confirmed that it plans to remove all videos containing misinformation regarding abortion, as well as any other false claims about the topic.
@Variety reports, beginning today, YouTube is instituting a full crackdown on misinformation videos about abortion—and there will be severe consequences for any user who goes against the new rules and policies. Via a recent Twitter thread on the company’s account, YouTube stated “we will remove content that provides instructions for unsafe abortion methods or promotes false claims about abortion safety under our medical misinformation policies.”
The statement continued, with YouTube adding “Like all of our policies on health/medical topics, we rely on published guidance from health authorities. We prioritize connecting people to content from authoritative sources on health topics, and we continuously review our policies & products as real-world events unfold.”
Additionally, the company also revealed the launch of a new information panel providing users with “context and information” from both local and global health experts that will now appear below all abortion-related videos.
You may recall that YouTube’s current guidelines prohibit any content promoting “harmful substances, treatments or substances [and content] contradicting expert consensus on certain safe medical practices.”
