Robin Thede is coming to HBO in what is being considered the first sketch comedy in television history to be written by, directed by and starring an array of black women.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” has been ordered straight to series and the half-hour show will, of course, feature a whole bunch women dripping in melanin. At the moment, an episode count and premiere date have not been determined.
Robin, who created the series, will star, write and executive produce the project alongside Issa Rae and her HBO-based Issa Rae Productions banner. The show falls under Issa’s overall deal with HBO.
Robin expressed her excitement for the show and said, “I created ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’ because I love how many insanely funny black women are grinding in these comedy streets! It’s time the WORLD recognizes. This show is going to be epic and Issa Rae & I are so honored to be bringing this project to HBO!”
The show marks Robin’s return to television after her BET show “The Rundown With Robin Thede,” was canceled after one season. Lauren Ashley Smith, who served as the head writer on Robin’s BET show will also be a head writer and co-exec producer on “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”
For those who may not know, Robin was the first African-American woman to serve as head writer for a late-night series and for the White House Correspondents Dinner.
