Wingstop Files Trademark To Sell Chicken Wings In The Metaverse!

Welp! At least there’ll be some good eats in the virtual world! Wingstop has reportedly filed a multi-class trademark to sell it’s iconic chicken wings in the metaverse.

According to Business Insider, the chicken wing chain joined the likes of McDonald’s and Panera Bread by filing trademark applications to enter the metaverse to the US Patent and Trademark Office On Feb. 25.

Insider spoke with a spokesperson from Wingstop, who noted that the company couldn’t comment on the details of the metaverse move, but that “the filing signifies an exciting public step to serve the world flavor in a virtual place.”

The application reportedly cites “downloadable virtual goods,” including NFTs and virtual food and drinks. It also covers software for trading cryptocurrency, NFTs, and digital tokens as well as downloadable rewards cards that can be redeemed for food in the real world and the virtual one.

“I think you’re going to see every brand that you can think of make these filings within the next 12 months,” trademark lawyer Josh Gerben told Forbes back in February. “I don’t think anyone wants to be the next Blockbuster and just completely ignore a new technology that’s coming.”

Chief digital officer of Panera Bread, George Hanson, explained the company is putting forth an effort to stay abreast of technological advancements, which now includes the metaverse.

“Panera is always working to be at the forefront of tech advancement,” Hanson told Forbes. “As a brand we are consistently looking for new ways to better our guest experience, whether in our cafes or in the metaverse.”

While the metaverse seemed like a farfetched idea when Mark Zuckerberg revealed his plans for the virtual world in October, things are starting to become very real as folks prepare to build lives there. As we previously reported, companies have been investing millions of dollars into the metaverse’s real estate market in order to secure land in the virtual world.
