While we have heard about the tragic death of Emmett Till, we’ll get a chance to learn more about his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, thanks to Chinonye Chukwu.
According to Variety, Whoopi Goldberg and Danielle Deadwyler will star in an upcoming film, “Till,” that will take a look at her fight for justice in the death of 14-year-old, Emmettt Till.
“Till” tells the story of Mamie’s decision to have an open casket for Emmett’s funeral that was a shock to the nation. The decision was said to have been made to show the terror of racism and the death of her son, which was a determining factor that further encouraged the birth of the civil rights movement.
Whoop Goldberg will star as Till’s grandmother, Alma Carthan, and she will also serve as a producer for the project. Deadwyler will portray Mamie Till-Mobley, while Goldberg is set to play Till’s grandmother.
“We have waited a very long time to bring this historically necessary important film to people,” Whoopi stated. “And as we watch the repression of American History when it comes to people of color it makes it even that more important. I couldn’t be with better people: Fred, Barbara, Chinonye, Keith, Michael and Danielle.”
Deadlyer, known for her role in HBO’s “Watchmen” stated, “It is a gift to learn the legacy and intimacies of our ancestors, those familial and communal, as is the life of Mamie Till-Mobley, a public leader and mother of the movement.”
As you know, in 1955, Emmett was visiting Money, MS from Chicago,IL and was killed for allegedly flirting with a white woman.
