Rap group #WeRFLY released “Swag Surfin” with rapper Easton back in 2009 and it became an instant hit after fans caught onto their dance wave! You cannot go to a cookout, a house party or a club without hearing that song. I mean as soon as you hear, ????“Man I got that swaaaaaag” you instantly search for someone to lock arms with and sway side to side as you wait for the beat to drop.
The dance is an iconic part of Black culture so it was epic when #Beyoncé mixed a #SwagSurfin’ transition with #DrunkInLove. Everyone on that stage went into that wave motion as soon as the beat dropped! It got me to thinking, where are We R F.L.Y. now? And more importantly, what did they think of Beyoncé performing their song?!
“It’s really hard to describe. It was a complete shock, it really caught us off guard. Nobody ever expects to see Beyonce on stage dancing to one of their songs,” Easton (@Only1Easton) tells The Shade Room. “Days later it’s still kind of shocking because she’s at the top of the game. For her to think about our record and add it to her Coachella set is a blessing, so big shoutout to Beyonce and the B-Hive!”
Group member Vee (@V_Fly9) said that Bey’s performance was a “dream come true for everybody to see such an iconic artist to highlight our song with the Marching Bands aspect.” He added, “Only thing could have made it better was us Swag Surfin on stage with Beyonce and the band, but stay tuned for that!”
I asked the group why they think “Swag Surfin” has became so iconic and group member Mook (@MookManShawty) says it’s because the song and dance is a product of unity.
“The dance was created on the Southside by Southside Mafia and then perfected on the eastside (Stone Mountain to be exact) by a dance crew called Motion Sickness. Then, we (F.L.Y. and Easton) brought the dance to life with lyrics on a K.E. On The Track beat,” Mook explained. “So right there you’ve got different hoods and different types of people who otherwise probably wouldn’t have had dealings coming together to create a great song which eventually blow up into what we know as ‘Swag Surfin’ today!”
All of the guys feel that Swag Surfin’ brings nothing but positivity for anyone who hears it. “People have compared it to the Electric Slide because everybody can have fun doing it in unison… all ages, all races, genders, no matter your background for that 4 minutes everybody is on the same wave,” Vee said.
As for what the guys are up to these days, they are still making music together, filming documentaries and raising children too! iMcFli (@iMcFli) tells us, “I have a new addition to my life my daughter Imajen, so I am working on being the best father for her while setting up her life so she doesn’t have to go through the things we did growing up.”
The men of We R F.L.Y. have a new song out now called #ItsWhateva and it’s available on all digital streaming sites. They’ve also been working on a documentary called “Swag Surfin Still Undefeated: The Greatest Story Still Untold.” Later this year, the group and Easton will be apart of “The Wave Tour” which features various artists and DJ’s.
The group hasn’t one thing to ask if you, Roommates!
“We have one question for the fans. As we approach the 10 year anniversary for Swag Surfin’ we have watched many artists such as Lil Wayne get on Swag Surfin’ and Remix It. But, the time has come for us to do the official Swag Surfin’ Remix and shoot the new visual for it. If you could pick 2 artists to feature with us on Swag Surfin who would you want us to add? We want the fans input on this one! Thank you for the support!”
