#Roommates, by now we’re all familiar with just how out of touch and shady awards shows can be when it comes to POC—but we hoped that things were getting just a bit better. Unfortunately, that’s not the case because early this morning when the nominees for the 2020 Golden Globes were announced…Ava DuVernay’s Netflix masterpiece “When They See Us” was nowhere to be found.
When any award show announces nominees there are bound to be snubs, but sometimes the lack of recognition truly hurts. Audiences were absolutely in agreement that Ava DuVernay’s Emmy-winning limited series “When They See Us” was not only one of the best projects of the year, but one of the best things they’ve ever seen onscreen. Which is why the reality that it didn’t receive a single nomination for this year’s Golden Globes is beyond puzzling.
However, the Golden Globes didn’t just shut out “When They See Us,” the voting committee also didn’t think to show any diversity in the nomination process at all. Lupita Nyong’o was shut out for her performance in horror-thriller “Us,” Zendaya was absent for her widely-praised performance in HBO’s breakout series “Euphoria” and there were no female writers or directors nominated.
Many are outraged on social media, as they are singing a familiar tune that initially sparked the #OscarsSoWhite movement on Twitter a few years ago, which was the result of the Academy Awards no nominated any POC in the major categories.
Although “When They See Us” did land series star Jharrel Jerome a well-deserved Emmy, most of the other actors (and director Ava) were shut out also. At this point we are simply tired of this same old process of not seeing “us.”
There is a bit of good news though, as “Harriet” star Cynthia Erivo was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama, Eddie Murphy was nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy for Netflix’s “Dolemite Is My Name!,” recent Emmy-winner Billy Porter was nominated for Best Actor in a TV Series for his role on “Pose and Beyoncé scored a nomination for Best Original Song for “The Lion King.”
Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
