Tinashe Speaks On Her Past Collaboration With R. Kelly

Tinashe appeared as a recent guest on an episode of the ‘Zach Sang Show,’ which premiered September 12. During the sit-down, Tinashe largely reflected on the contrasts in her career as an independent artist. According to Roc Nation, Tinashe was formerly signed to the major label RCA from 2013 to 2019.

Toward the end of the interview, the host questioned Tinashe, asking if her single collaborations with R. Kelly and Chris Brown felt “label-y” or were “forced” on her by her former label.

Tinashe responded by gasping and letting out a brief laugh.

“You think I wanted — I literally… block out that R. Kelly song from my mind. I forget that that even exists,” she explained. “That is so embarrassing. That is so unreal that I even have a song with R. Kelly.”

The singer reiterated her sentiments by explaining, “That’s embarrassing — yes, it was label-y!” Then, the 30-year-old added that she was “so young too.” We must note that the song Tinashe refers to is called “Let’s Be Real Now.” The single was released in 2015 when the singer was around 22.

Tinashe Addresses Her Past Collaboration With Chris Brown & The Singer Responds

Additionally, Tinashe also addressed her 2015 collaboration with Chris Brown, a song titled “Player.” She explained that it was a song everyone wanted to be a “big moment.”

“So I feel like in their mind,” Tinashe explained, referring to her former music label RCA. “They were like, ‘You need this support.’ And he was like their biggest artist they had on rhythmic radio at the time. And to me, it was like, ‘Well, this is a pop song, so I really don’t feel like we should put Chris on it… that doesn’t compute to me.’ But I don’t know…”

Before concluding her statements on the matter, the 30-year-old did acknowledge that “at the time” of the collaborations, there was a “part” of her that was “thankful” for them and “hopeful” the singles would find success.

“I am collaborating with a very successful artist, I don’t know, this isn’t like fully bad [even though] it doesn’t make full sense to me,” Tinashe explained of her sentiments at the time.

Chris Brown appeared to catch wind of the singer’s statements about their 2015 collaboration, and he wasted no time sharing his response.

“NAME 5 TINASHE songs or die…. EVERYBODY DEAD…”
