Back in 2020, Washington’s NFL team announced that they would no longer go by the Redskins as they moved past the organization’s problematic past. As they retired the name, they temporarily went by the name “The Washington Football” team, now after two seasons, they have settled on a new permanent name.
On Wednesday, the organization announced that they will now go by the Commanders. According to ESPN, the team’s president Jason Wright and coach Ron Rivera spoke about how they were able to finally settle on a name. Wright said, “We landed on this in part because we believed the Washington Commanders can carry the rich legacy of this team, a championship legacy. It’s got the weight and heft of something befitting a 90-year franchise. It’s something that broadly resonated with our fans in this process and something that embodies the values of service and leadership that characterizes the DMV.”
He continued to say, “What this effort really is at its core is not landing on a name that was going to be unanimously loved by everybody but to start a process by which we can continue to preserve what’s best about the burgundy and gold. Those have been colors and a name and a franchise that, when you have trouble talking to each other on other topics, you can come together and hug and high-five and be one while cheering this team on.”
One legacy. One unified future.

As we previously reported, back in 2020 when the team announced that they would be undergoing a name change, they said, “The decision to use the ‘Washington Football Team’ for this season allows the franchise the ability to undertake an in-depth branding process to properly include player, alumni, fan, community, and sponsor input. To date, we have been pleased to see so many people putting forward their vision of what the new name and design should be on their social media channels and we look forward to including their feedback as this process progresses.”
Roommates, what are your thoughts on Washington’s new name?
