We might have a lil’ logo war on our hands, chile, but we got to know–is Walmart reaching with this one? The megastore has filed a complaint to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, arguing that a proposed logo design for Kanye West’s Yeezy brand looks too similar to Walmart’s logo.
In its complaint, Walmart argued that Yeezy’s proposed design “is likely to cause confusion, mistake and deception” among consumers, according to Business Insider. Walmart is concerned that this will potentially cause people to mistakenly associate Yeezy’s products with Walmart.
Yeezy’s proposed logo has eight three-dot spokes radiating outward in a star-like pattern, while Walmart’s logo, which the company has used since 2007, has six solid spokes with rounded ends.
Walmart said in its complaint that a “false affiliation” between the two brands could “injure and damage” Walmart and the “goodwill” associated with the retail giant.
Reps for Kanye and Yeezy did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
Yeezy and Walmart’s brands couldn’t be more different, when you think about it.
While Walmart touts low prices aimed at bargain shoppers, the Yeezy brand recently made history in the apparel world after the sneakers were named the most valuable sneakers in history.
We exclusively reported that the 2008 Nike Air Yeezy’s that Kanye wore to the 2008 Grammys went on sale for over $1 million at Sotheby’s—making it the highest-priced sneaker ever to go on sale in the history of global sneaker sales.
The shoes ended up selling for nearly $2 million, breaking a world record.
We’ll have to see what the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has to say about Walmart’s complaint and if anything is decided from there, we’ll definitely keep you posted.
