Vogue is speaking out after negative backlash surrounding a photo of Kendall Jenner they posted over the weekend. In the Instagram pic, the model and reality star is rocking what some people say looks too close to an afro. Some commenters called it out as cultural appropriation and others asked the magazine why didn’t they just hire a model of color?
Meanwhile, a few other commenters said it doesn’t look like a fro to them and that they know white people with curly hair that teases out just like this too..
Well, Vogue is admitting they may have had a mishap. In response to the backlash, the publication said “we certainly did not mean to offend anyone by it.”
“The image is meant to be an update of the romantic Edwardian/Gibson Girl hair which suits the period feel of the Brock Collection, and also the big hair of the ’60s and the early ’70s, that puffed-out, teased-out look of those eras,” Vogue said in a statement obtained by E! News. “We apologize if it came across differently than intended, and we certainly did not mean to offend anyone by it.”
The photos are a part of a new Vogue story for the November issue, which include a variety of Brock Collection dresses.
Roommates, what are your thoughts? Did Vogue have a reason to apologize?
