Roommates, video footage has been released of Rayshard Brooks just before he was sadly killed by police. In the footage, you see a struggle between him and the officers just before he was shot on June 12th after initially being stopped due to suspicion of DUI while parked at a local Wendy’s in Atlanta.
Atlanta police have released the body camera footage from the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks. Brooks, 27, was shot and killed by an Atlanta police officer in the parking lot of a Wendy’s off University Avenue. Garrett Rolfe, has been identified as the (now former) Atlanta police officer who shot and killed Brooks—he was abruptly fired less than 24 hours after the shooting. Meanwhile, the other officer involved, identified as Devin Brosnan, has currently been placed on administrative duty.
District Attorney Paul Howard recently confirmed that the decision to officially charge Rolfe with the murder of Rayshard Brooks is set to be made within the next few days. The shooting led to the abrupt resignation of Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields after Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms called for the immediate termination of Rolfe.
Police approached Brooks sleeping in his car in the Wendy’s parking lot after an employee called them. Once they arrived, they questioned him, conducted a field sobriety test and determined that he was under the influence. Brooks seemed upbeat and cooperative during the questioning and tests.
The officer then told Brooks to put his hands behind his back so he can be handcuffed. From there, a struggle broke out and Brooks grabbed a taser from Rolfe and started to run away before he was shot in the back.
Lawyers for Rayshard Brooks’ family said that tasers are not considered “deadly weapons” by police and that Brooks should not have been shot and killed. Mayor Bottoms also agreed that deadly use of force was not necessary.
