On Wednesday the Milwaulkee Bucks made a decision not to face the Orlando Magic in Game 5 of the playoffs. Their decision would later lead to a domino effect, where the other teams that were scheduled to play on Wednesday were no longer playing as they decided to boycott in the wake of the recent shooting of Jacob Blake.
The NBA eventually announced that all games would not be going on, and would be rescheduled at a later date.
Following in the NBA’s lead, the WNBA also decided to no longer play. The ladies of the Atlanta Dream and the Washington Mystics were scheduled to face off, but later they made the decision to no longer play.
Elizabeth Williams from the Atlanta Dream read a statement on behalf of her team and the rest of the WNBA and said, “We stand in solidarity with our brothers in the NBA, and will continue this conversation with our brothers and sisters across all leagues and look to take collective action. What we have seen over the last few months and what most recently with the brutal police shooting of Jacob Blake is overwhelming.”
However, the boycotts didn’t stop there. The games that were scheduled in Major Leauge Baseball (MLB) were also canceled.
It was first announced that the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds made the decision not to play their games. Shortly after, it was announced that the San Francisco Giants and the LA Dodgers were not playing their game, and the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres were not playing their game.
Soccer teams Inter Miami and Atlanta United also boycotted their game and stood on the field in solidarity.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka also announced that she would not be playing in her Semifinals match.
