U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell Says Reparations Aren’t A ‘Good Idea’ & Americans Made Up For Slavery By Electing A Black President

The conversation of whether or not African Americans should get reparations for slavery has been an on going one for a cool minute. I personally think women should get reparations for periods too but that’s a different conversation…

Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, had many reasons to give on why he doesn’t believe in reparations for African Americans. He gives the example of electing an African American president as a reason to not have reparations, as well as states that “none of us currently living” are responsible for slavery. Whew chile!

Peep exactly what he had to say when asked if he supported reparations for slavery:

“I don’t think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago for whom none of us currently living are responsible is a good idea,” he told reporters. “We’ve tried to deal with our original sin of slavery by fighting a civil war, by passing landmark civil rights legislation. We’ve elected an African American president.”

What’t interesting about this is that back in 2010 Mitch definitely said NOT re-electing Barack Obama was a top priority for the Republican Party.

“The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president,” he told National Journal magazine in October 2010.

Mitch continues to say that having reparations would be difficult in terms of determining who to compensate.

“We’ve had waves of immigrants as well who have come to the country and experienced dramatic discrimination of one kind or another,” he said. “So no, I don’t think reparations are a good idea.”
