Tyler Perry recently appeared on Keke Palmer’s ‘Baby, This Is Keke’ podcast and shared his thoughts about bougie critics of his films. The filmmaker said that he is not concerned with the judgment from “highbrow negroes.”
During the interview, the 54-year-old stated that he doesn’t allow the noise of haters to affect him. Tyler said that he is fulfilling his God-given purpose and no naysayer will throw him off his game.
Additionally, the screenwriter told Palmer, “If you let somebody talk you out of a place that God has put you in, you are going to find yourself in hell.” The actress seemingly agreed as she slowly exhaled with an “Ouu” and closed her eyes.
The ‘Those Who Wish Me Dead’ director said he leans into the positive messaging he receives from his supporters. Perry said, “For everyone who is a critic, there are thousands of…emails from people saying” that they felt seen by his work. “Oh my God, how do you know me? How do you know this about my family,” he said would write.
Oprah’s bestie stated that many of his fans can’t afford therapy, but they can purchase a ticket to one of his films, which seems to help them cope with their traumas.
Additionally, the moviemaker discussed classist Black people who speak negatively about his films. Tyler said, “You’ve got this ‘highbrow Negro’ who is all up in the air with his nose up looking at everything, and then you got people like where I come from and me who are grinders who really know what it’s like…”
Next, the ‘Divorce In The Black’ producer said that people “whose mothers were caregivers for White kids and were maids and housekeepers…beauticians” deserve to have their relatives’ stories told.
Perry said, “Don’t discount these people and say that their story don’t matter. Who are you to say which Black story is important or should be told.” The Emmy winner got a little spicy at the closing of his impassionate message, stating, “Get out of here with that b******.” Keke gagged at Perry’s boldness.
Well, Tyler said say watcha want, but his plots are for his people! Thoughts, roomies?
