#Roommates, Tyler Perry has long been praised by his fans for providing work for black actors and actresses—but apparently that doesn’t translate into his writer’s room. He just revealed on social media that he is responsible 100 percent of the writing for all of his TV and movie projects.
Many black creatives seeking work in the entertainment industry look to work with Tyler Perry to get their foot in the door, however if you’re a writer he won’t be much help. Tyler recently posted a video on Instagram where he briefly discussed his work ethic, admitting that when it comes to penning his scripts, he’s the only one who writes them.
In the video, Tyler can be heard saying this:
“So, I don’t know if you know this, but all shows on television have a writers room. “Most of the time, there are 10 people or 12 or whatever that write on these television shows. Well, I have no writers room. Nobody writes any of my work. I write it all. Why am I telling you this? I wrote all of these scripts by myself in 2019. Work ethic!”
Although his video was meant to be inspirational to others, it garnered very mixed reactions, as many pointed out how difficult it is in general to get black voices in the writer’s room—and since Tyler has his own studio and production company he could help out many writer’s desperately trying to get their start in Hollywood.
Elsewhere, other critics expressed that Tyler writing all his own scripts is very believable because they are all very similar.
A few months ago Tyler Perry Studios officially opened in Atlanta. It has since hosted the Democratic debate and the 2019 Miss Universe pageant.
Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
