The attorney for the two brothers who authorities accused of taking part in a staged attack on #JussieSmollett say they feel “betrayed” by him.
“I believe my clients were betrayed,” Gloria Schmidt told @CNN, referring to brothers Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo. “You have to look at what kind of relationship they had with Mr. Smollett. He’s a celebrity. This is somebody who is in a position of power over my clients.
This statement comes off the heels of the announcement that all 16 criminal charges brought against Jussie have been dropped.
“We’ve seen a lot of stories in the news where celebrities think they might be above the law. It’s just not the case,” Schmidt said.
Jussie said he’s never once changed his story and still claims that he was attacked in late January by two men. Police initially investigated the case as a possible hate crime.
After his charges were dropped, Jussie’s legal team said, “today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him…Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29th.”
Jussie spoke out after his court appearance today, thanking his family and fans for their support and prayers throughout the investigation.
“I want you to know that not for a moment was it in vain. I have been truthful and consistent on every level since day one. I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I’m accused of. This has been an incredibly difficult time. Honestly one of the worst of my entire life. But I am a man of faith and I am a man that has knowledge of my history and I would not bring my family, our lives or the movement through a fire like this, I just wouldn’t,” Jussie said.
