Roommates, the Illinois state attorney’s office has dropped all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett!
His legal team said in a statement, “today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him,” they said. “Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29th.”
This news comes less than two weeks after he pleaded #NotGuilty to 16 counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly lying to police about a hate crime. CBS Chicago reports that the judge on the case has granted a motion to seal the case.
Jussie provided a live statement shortly following the news. He says that he has been truthful in his recount of the story.
“I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one,” he said. “I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I’ve been accused of.”
There have been many statements and opinions made about the verdict, including those from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago police superintendent Eddie Johnson.
Rahm Emmanuel said, “He used the laws of the hate crime association that all of us through the years have put on the books to stand up to be the values that embody what we believe in,” he said. “This is a whitewash of justice. A grand jury could not have been clearer.”
Eddie Johnson includes, “Do I think justice was served? No. What do I think justice is? I think this city is still owed an apology,” he said. He went on to suggest that Jussie’s attorneys “brokered a deal.”
As most of you know, Jussie stars inLee Daniel’s “Empire” which airs on FOX. The network released a statement which read, “Jussie Smollett has always maintained his innocence and we are gratified that all charges against him have been dismissed.”
What are your thoughts on the verdict, Roommates?!
