Morehouse College, one of the most prestigious HBCUs in America, has broken a record at their 132nd graduation ceremony when three Morehouse Men were recognized as Valedictorians!
Liam Davis, Ian Niemeyer, and Willie Thompson each completed their time at Morehouse College with a 4.0 overall GPA. They are the first trio to be recognized at once in the history of American Institutions.
If y’all didn’t already know, Morehouse is recognized as the nations largest liberal arts college for men and according to history has the highest rate of black men earning bachelor’s degrees than any other institution in the world. So it comes as no surprise that they are capable of setting new standards and creating excellence within the collegiate and black community.
Morehouse’s president, John Silvanus Wilson Jr., undoubtedly is beyond proud of his institution and the three young men who are departing as Morehouse Men Class of 2016 valedictorians. He told the More House NewsCenter:
“The honoring of three of our graduating seniors jointly as valedictorian serves as one proud and significant example of Morehouse College’s commitment to academic excellence—which also ties to one of the college’s strategic focuses of acuity…Acuity means striving for the best—both intellectual and personal excellence,” he continued. “These are just a pair of the qualities that embody Morehouse men such as our three valedictorians and salutatorian, and countless scholars who have performed at the highest levels in their respective disciplines. We celebrate these graduating seniors and their successes and will continue to prepare men who demonstrate principles such as acuity and integrity.”
So who are these young men? Liam Davis is 22, from Nassau, Bahamas and majored in business administration; concentrating in accounting. He plans to attend Wale Forest University for their master of science program in accountancy.
Ian Niemeyer is also 22 and is a native of Durham, N.C., majored in economics and minors in mathematics. During his time at Morehouse he was the president and portfolio manager of the Morehouse Investment and Finance Club.
Last but not least, Willie Thompson, also 22, was an economics major with a minor in Chinese-studies. Here’s the ironic thing about him: he didn’t even want to attend an HBCU! His mother, an Alabama State graduate convinced him to explore his HBCU options and although he came “kicking and screaming,” he says he is leaving “happy and rejoicing.” Ultimately, he is planning to work for the Bridgespan Group in Boston.
We’d like to extend a warm and huge congratulations to those three young men; as well as the rest of the Morehouse’s graduating class.
