The graduating class of 2019 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School received a surprise on Sunday when Dwyane Wade was revealed as the commencement speaker.
According to USA Today, Dwyane has been a strong supporter of the Parkland, FL community since the unfortunate 2018 shooting that claimed the lives of 17 people. He visited the school and uplifted the students on the first full day of classes after the shooting occurred.
The shooting personally affected Dwyane after he learned that Joaquin Oliver, one of the victims in the shooting, had been buried in his jersey. He had also met with Joaquin’s family and dedicated the remaining of his season to him.
During his commencement speech, Dwyane said, “Thank you for reminding me of my purpose. I’ll try to continue to be a leader and a fighter that Joaquin Oliver thought I was. And I’ll keep reminding you of how the strength that was shown, the leadership that was shown — from the students, from the staff, from the parents, from this community — was powerful. And it is powerful. What I love most, and appreciated most, was that you all became advocates. You became the faces and the voices for kids all around the world. I’m so proud to say the words ‘MSD strong.’ ”
