Roommates, we have yet another person announcing their run for president. This time New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is the latest person to announce his run for the 2020 presidency. He officially made the announcement on Thursday, making him the 23rd person to announce their run for the Democratic Party’s 2020 nomination.
According to CNN, de Blasio said, “I’m a New Yorker, I’ve known Trump’s a bully for a long time. This is not news to me or anyone else here. And I know how to take him on. Don’t back down in the face of a bully — confront him, take him on.”
He continued, “Donald Trump must be stopped — I’ve beaten him before and I will do it again. I’m Bill de Blasio, and I’m running for president because it’s time we put working people first.”
In a video, de Blasio also mentioned a number of policies he’s defended in the city, including guaranteed health care, paid sick leave and $15 minimum wage. His announcement on entering the race reportedly comes after months of deliberating and some visits to early states. However, before making his official announcement, he was already met with some criticism.
According to NBC News, Good Morning America host George Stephanopoulos noted that many New Yorkers did not want de Blasio running for president. However, de Blasio pointed out his two electoral victories in New York City and said the only “poll that actually matters is the election.”
de Blasio is scheduled to travel to Iowa and South Carolina for four days of campaigning.
Roommates, what are your thoughts?
