Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garçon and defensive end Ricky Jean Francois are on their way to the Bahamas and Haiti in order to deliver medical supplies from their team doctor and training staff. They are bringing gauze, IV solutions, ACE wraps and bandages to medical professionals who are caring for victims of Hurricane Matthew as well as food and water. Since both of these men had ties to Haiti, Redskins owner Dan Snyder encouraged them to head down to deliver the aid.
“We are very fortunate to have resources and the means to step in and make a difference in times of peril,” Snyder said. “Even though we are not a relief organization, I felt it was critically important for us to use our resources to help those affected by Hurricane Matthew.”
Speaking about his conversation with Snyder, Garçon says that Synder has always shown concern for his family and offered to fly him and fellow teammate down there to lend a hand.
“He’s been asking me how my family’s been doing even before the hurricane and after the hurricane, he’s always asking me how’s my family and everybody, because he heard about the hurricane coming, so he’s like ‘Hey, how’s your family doing, are they safe?'” Garçon said. “After yesterday’s game he was like ‘Hey, do you want to go down to Haiti?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah.’
Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe spoke to GlobeNewsWire about how grateful the citizens of the Bahamas are for their help.
“We are grateful to our partners, the Washington Redskins, who wasted no time in offering assistance to the Islands of The Bahamas,” he said. We want to thank the Redskins, especially owners Daniel and Tanya Synder, who are no strangers to our beautiful country. It is our hope that other organizations will follow the example set by the Redskins.”
How awesome is that, Roommates?! Kudos to the Redskins!
