TSR Matrimoniez: Roommates, congratulations are in order for Lena Waithe and her fiancée turned wife, Alana Mayo! Lena has just revealed on the Ellen Show that they secretly got married at a courthouse in San Fransisco.
“We just snuck and did it,” Lena tells John Legend. “You know, we didn’t make any announcements. It was her idea, like all good things are. She was just driving and she saw the courthouse and said ‘We should get married there.’ And I said, ‘Cool. I’m down.”
Lena said she and Alana said their vows in front of a statue of late gay rights activists Harvey Milk, who was assassinated in 1978. He was one was the first openly gay elected official in California. The location’s connection to the historic fight for LGBTQ rights made the quick ceremony special for the couple.
“It was a really humbling day to marry someone so amazing but also to really appreciate all the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that,” she said. “Everybody should be able to do that.”
Lena pooped the question on Thanksgiving Day back in 2017 while the two were on a baecation. Lena says she the proposal was very “chill”, which is exactly the way she wants to lead the rest of her life with her wife.
“The funny thing is, it was actually super chill ’cause even though I am very over-the-top, my lovely lady is the opposite, which is good because I’m very much in front of the scene and she’s very much behind them,” she said. “It was just, liken the morning, in the bed, no strings, but, you know, it was super low-key.”
Lena has openly shared her relationship with the world, constantly singing the praises of her wife. Back in July, Lena spoke about how her wife keeps her “grounded” in her very busy life.
“She definitely helps to keep me grounded,” she said. “When I get home from winning an Emmy, she’s like, ‘Don’t forget to take out the recycling.’ Its those things that I think are really helpful.”
