Tristan Thompson has been granted temporary custody of his 17-year-old brother, Amari. As The Shade Room previously reported, their mother, Andrea, unexpectedly passed away in January after a heart attack.
According to PEOPLE, the 32-year-old requested sole legal guardianship of his younger brother on September 8. At the time, Thompson reportedly alleged that he and Amari’s father, Trevor Thompson, had been “absent” from Amari’s life since 2014.
Additionally, Thompson explained that he was Amari’s “closest living family member.”
We should note that Thompson’s younger brother reportedly has epilepsy “in addition to other medical conditions.” According to the outlet, this requires the teenager to receive “around-the-clock support.”
“Amari is a minor and has medical conditions that render him unable to take care of himself or seek gainful employment,” the original filing document reads, as per PEOPLE. “Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs.”
According to the outlet, a Los Angeles court granted the NBA player temporary guardianship of his brother on Wednesday. The outlet reports that the ruling bestows Thompson “all powers a parent having legal custody of a child would have.”
Additionally, the father of four has been given the “authority” to “manage” his brother’s “finances and assets,” travel alongside him nationally and internationally, and other privileges.
“[Tristan Thompson may] manage ward’s finances and assets, travel with the ward within the United States of America and internationally, enroll ward in social and other extracurricular activities, decide living arrangements of the ward [and] obtain legal counsel on behalf of the ward,” the court documents reportedly read as per PEOPLE.
The court’s decision to give Thompson temporary guardian of the 17-year-old was reportedly granted due to “sufficient evidence” and “good cause.”
According to TMZ, a hearing to discuss the “permanent guardianship” of Amari Thompson has been scheduled for November.
As The Shade Room previously reported, Andrea Thompson passed away on Thursday, January 5. According to US Weekly, Thompson was 53 years old.
Afterward, Thompson’s ex-girlfriend and mother of two of his four children, Khloé Kardashian, joined the basketball player as he left Los Angeles and flew to his mother’s home in Toronto, Canada.
The following week, it was reported that Thompson would be joined by Kardashian, her sister Kim, and their mother Kris for Andrea Thompson’s funeral, as per The Shade Room. Then, Khloé Kardashian shared a special tribute to Thompson’s late mother in the following weeks.
In February, Tristan Thompson broke his silence and shared his own tribute to Andrea, as per The Shade Room.
Since then, it appears Khloé Kardashian has been an instrumental support system for Thompson. In July, Kardashian celebrated the first birthday of their youngest son, Tatum. However, the day before, she also shared birthday wishes for Thompson’s brother Amari.
Kardashian revealed that she hosted a special birthday party for the 17-year-old, as per The Shade Room.
Additionally, Kardashian shared that Tristan and his brother recently moved in with her following the basketball player’s roof caving in at his home.
