Trina is opening up about her current relationship with fellow rapper Nicki Minaj while speaking about their previous collaboration, ‘BAPS.’
On Tuesday, June 4, Carlos King released an exclusive interview with Trina via YouTube. During the hour-and-a-half-long conversation, the rapper shared where her current relationship with Minaj stands.
Ultimately, Trina revealed they hadn’t spoken “in a while.”
“I haven’t spoken to her in a while,” she told King, who then asked her to elaborate. “I would say [we haven’t spoken] in probably a little bit over a year or so, maybe longer… Well, we came off the pandemic, my mom passed in 2019… so maybe… like a year or two.”
According to TMZ, Trina’s mother, Vernessa Taylor, passed away on September 3, 2019, after a battle with cancer. Trina explained to King that after her mother’s passing, she “didn’t really speak to a lot of people.”
“I think I had went into this little phase, and I had just… I didn’t know how to feel,” she stated.
However, despite the length of time since she and Minaj last spoke, Trina strongly acknowledged how “proud” she is of her fellow female emcee.
“I’m proud, like, you’re deserving of this, like, we watched your first tour, it was great… and now it’s like phenomenal, and you’re just looking at the growth — you just got your son,” Trina said, referring to Minaj. “…I’m just happy for you, even if you over here and I’m over here, but I’m just happy for you. And I feel like everything that’s happening for her, she deserves.”
During the conversation, Trina also touched on her 2019 collaboration with Minaj, ‘BAPS.’ The rapper admitted that her team dropped the ball when it came to promoting the track and that a former member of her team wrongly misspoke about Minaj at the time.
Social media users reacted to Trina’s statements in The Shade Room’s comment section.
During her sitdown with King, Trina also addressed when she made headlines after sharing her number one female rapper in December 2023. As The Shade Room previously reported, at the time, the rapper spoke exclusively with HipHopDX and was asked who “opened the door” for the rise of female rappers.
In turn, Trina seemingly asserted that Beyoncé should take all the credit. Additionally, the rapper called the singer “the No. 1 female rapper when she does rap.”
“Yeah, Beyoncé. ‘Cause she is the No. 1 female rapper when she does rap… There’s no sleeping on the Queen,” Trina said. “It’s just one of those things like, of course, it’s the Queen, it’s Beyoncé, but when you hear her do a song and it’s rapping involved, it’s like, ‘Oh my God’ — it’s more inspiration… It’s just a good thing.”
While speaking with King, Trina explained that she was “fresh off” Bey’s Renaissance tour and was “in the hype of the moment.”
