It’s been five years since Trayvon Martin lost his life #Roommates. His death sparked movements across the country and brought issues about race, and social justice to the forefront. Trayvon will be receiving a posthumous degree from Florida Memorial University, for the industrial ambitions he held as a teenager, according to HBCUDigest.com
Trayvon had dreams of becoming a pilot, and to receive a bachelor’s in aeronautical science is truly amazing.
I had a chance to speak with Reuben Riffin, Special Projects Coordinator at FMU, and he says that “this is a testament to those who try to keep us from getting to college and we graduate anyways!”
He continued,
“Being a part of the university family that is making this happen is genuinely humbling. His legacy will forever live on not just through degrees but for the endless fight to end the “open season” on minority males.”
His parents Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin will accept his degree during the school’s commencement ceremony on May 13.
