Roommates, as you might already know, getting inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is an honor in the music industry. The induction ceremony happens annually and this year marks its 36th occurrence! On Wednesday, the organization revealed its 2021 list of inductees. Tina Turner, Jay-Z and LL Cool J were among those listed. The organization categorized this year’s list as the “most diverse” in its entire history.
There are 13 inductees spread across four categories including: Performer Category, Early Influence Award, Musical Excellence Award and Ahmet Ertegun Award. The known Queen of Rock & Roll, Tina Turner, will be inducted into the performer category. Jay-Z will also be inducted under the performer category. LL Cool J joins two additional artists in the Musical Excellence Award category.
“This diverse class of talented Inductees reflects the Rock Hall’s ongoing commitment to honor artists whose music created the sound of youth culture,” John Sykes, the Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation said.
Not any and every artist makes it unto this prestigious list. In fact, to be eligible an artist must have released their first record 25 or more years prior to being inducted. The inductees are selected via ballots. These ballots are sent to an international group of more than 1,200 “artists, including current living Inductees, historians and members of the music industry.” Several factors are taken into consideration including “musical influence”, “length and depth of career” and “superiority in style and technique.”
In addition to the list, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame released short biographies on their official site for each inductee. Tina Turner blazed her own path in the world of rock & roll. She first claimed fame in the 1960s as one part of the Ike and Tina Turner duo. Later in her solo career, her 1984 album ‘Private Dancer’ went five times platinum. Her grammy-winning song “What’s Love Got To Do With It” captured audiences just as much as her signature leather and jeans look.
Jay-Z, is a household name and hip-hop legend. The Brooklyn-born rapper has secured “14 number one albums” and “22 Grammys.” This induction serves as his second hall of fame honor as he became the “first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame” in 2017. In addition to music, Jay-Z has found himself succeeding in industries like “fashion, sports ownership, and music streaming.”
LL Cool J stepped on the music scene and signed with Def Jam Records as a teenager. The site credited him with ushering in “hip-hop’s second wave” with some of his hit singles like ‘Rock the Bells’ and ‘I Need a Beat.’ He’s named as one of the “best-selling hip-hop artists of the decade” in the 1980s. LL Cool J used his musical success to venture and conquer lanes in movies and television, fitness and fashion.
The induction ceremony is set to happen in Cleveland Ohio on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 8 p.m. ET at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
“It will make for an unforgettable live celebration of music in October at this year’s Induction Ceremony in Cleveland,” John said.
