#Roommates, it looks like the coronavirus isn’t sparing anyone, animals included. At least that’s the latest development after it is being reported that a tiger in the Bronx Zoo reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.
According to NY Post, USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed the diagnosis of the 4-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia.
The finding definitely raises questions about the virus’ transmission. As of now it seems people can pass the virus to animals, but animals in return can not spread the virus. A USDA official said: “There doesn’t appear to be, at this time, any evidence that suggests that the animals can spread the virus to people or that they can be a source of the infection in the United States.”
The worst part, is that more cats have actually gotten sick. Zoo officials said Nadia, three other tigers, and three African lions have all developed a dry cough, but are all expected to recover. In their press release they said: “Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers.”
There’s a bit of speculation when it comes to how these animals have contracted the virus. Being that evidence suggests animals can not transmit the disease but people can, it is being speculated that a zoo handler may have passed the virus along to the tiger. Though there is currently no concrete proof, it is worth pointing out that humans can pass the virus along to animals and not the other way around. Someone get ‘The Tiger King” aka Joe Exotic on the line!
The outbreaks around the world have already taken over news stations, social media and has become the new normal for everyone. We encourage all of you roommates to stay safe, and listen t your local officials!
