New her, who dis!? Tiffany Haddish is celebrating six months of commitment to her sobriety and celibacy. The actress and comedian opened up to PEOPLE about her journey and the reasons behind it.
Haddish told the outlet she quit drinking after being arrested on suspicion of DUI in 2022 and 2023. The first happened in Georgia, and last November, police arrested her in Los Angeles after she fell asleep in her car in the middle of an interaction.

“I’m very sober. I haven’t had a drink since [the incident]. When I sit back and look at my life, everything that’s crazy that’s happened is because somebody or myself had alcohol in their system.”
Looking back at her recent years, Tiffany added:
“My world fell apart,” Haddish told PEOPLE. “I’ve learned to take tomatoes being thrown at me and turn them into tomato sauce. And I’m going to make spaghetti.”
And she’s had to, given her public controversies and private battles over the years. That includes her resurfaced inappropriate ‘Funny or Die’ skit and its subsequent lawsuit in 2022 to her public split with Common the year before and the death of her grandmother.

Tiffany also revealed that she’s been abstaining from sex for the same amount of time as her sobriety. To her, the behaviors “went together.” Being Tiffany, she didn’t hold back while explaining the mindset that being drunk put her in.
“With alcohol [my mind] would just be like ‘You’re horny, let’s just do it.'” Now, she says, “I be like ‘nah, nope.'”
Her issue was, in her words, “waking up next to ugly men.”
But abstinence doesn’t mean the end of Tiff’s love life! In fact, she shared that she has a really communicative approach with the men she’s dating. “They all know about each other,” she told PEOPLE.
At this point in her life, Tiffany—who is publishing a memoir on May 7— feels “genuinely happy” with life.
“I wanted this book to be about something. I felt like I needed to live a little more life and get a better understanding of where I am now.”
