This Year’s Grammy Awards Receive Lowest Ratings Ever

This year’s Grammys ceremony fell on the absolute worst occasion, as it aired just hours after the world was informed of the news that NBA legend Kobe Bryant, along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, had been victims of a fatal helicopter crash. Well, the ratings for this year’s award show are out—and they are exactly what you might expect.

Despite some of the biggest artists in the music industry in attendance and featuring some memorable performances, the 2020 Grammys fell incredibly short from a ratings perspective. @RevoltTV reports, this year’s Grammy Awards were the lowest rated in the history of the show. According to the Nielsen ratings, the three-hour award show only received 18.7 million viewers, easily making it lowest-rated broadcast ever.

The 2020 Grammys dropped roughly 6% from last year’s ratings and, in comparison, a 53% drop from the 2012 Grammys eight years ago. Although Grammys host Alicia Keys along with R&B legends Boyz II Men, did the best they could to honor such a heartbreaking incident with Kobe and his daughter by singing “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday” and Lizzo opened her performance by dedicating it to Kobe, many music fans were just too sad to watch this year’s show.

Keys actually opened the Grammys acknowledging the somber mood of the night:

“Here we are together, on music’s biggest night, celebrating the artists that do it best. But to be honest with you, we’re all feeling crazy sadness right now, because earlier today, Los Angeles, America and the whole wide world lost a hero, and we’re literally standing here, heartbroken, in the house that Kobe Bryant built.”

This outcome is definitely not surprising given the turn of events. We want to continue to send Kobe’s family our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
