Last week, there was a viral video of Sgt. Jonathan Pentland where he could be seen confronting a young black man by the name of Deandre, for being in the “wrong neighborhood.” Many people came to the young man’s defense as they ordered for the U.S. Army to take action against Pentland after he was seen shoving and yelling at the young man in the disturbing video.
Now, the young woman who recorded the viral video is sharing what happened from her perspective. As well as how she feels after the viral moment, and the consequences she feels Pentland should face for the incident.
Shadae McCallum joined the ladies of “The Real,” and shared that she did not know the young man nor did she know Pentland. She recalled the incident and said that both she and the young man had been walking in the neighborhood, and he was walking ahead of her. At some point, the man engaged in a conversation with a woman who was standing in her front yard. She said that the woman initiated the conversation. The woman’s mother-in-law eventually got involved and told the young man he needed to leave the area.
According to Shadae, the woman’s mother-in-law called Pentland to get involved and he proceeded to tell the young man that he needed to leave the area. However, Shadae said she felt compelled to record the incident after Pentland pushed the young man.
“In that moment, I was focused on making sure the young man was protected,” said Shadae. “I wanted to make sure that anything Jonathan did was recorded.”
Shadae continued to explain the aftermath of the incident has been traumatic for her because there have been negative comments about what else she could have done within that moment.
However, when it comes to the consequences she feels Pentland should have to apologize to Deandre, and she also mentioned community service as well as anger management classes.
As we previously reported, Pentland has since been charged with assault, and also suspended from his duties at Fort Jackson.
