Switch it up and make it real for me! Roomies, it’s been nearly five years since former President Barack Obama announced that Harriet Tubman’s face would be featured on the $20 bill by 2020, and we’re still waiting. The action was delayed under the actions of former President Donald Trump, but we’re still keeping our fingers crossed as we wait to see if it will ever come to fruition. However, it looks like another influential Black woman will be getting her flowers in the form of a coin very soon!
According to the U.S. Mint’s four-year program, “American Women Quarters Program,” iconic poet Maya Angelou will be the first woman through this program to receive a quarter with her face on it. Starting next year through 2025, the U.S. Mint will issue up to five new designs with other historical figures. In addition, groundbreaking astronaut #SallyRide will also have her face on a quarter as well. The women were chosen because of their significant contributions to the U.S. Maya and Sally also received the “Presidential Medal of Freedom” from President Barack Obama. The medal is the highest civilian honor in the U.S.
Although the quarters will have Maya and Sally’s faces on their backs, former President George Washington’s face will remain on the front side. The U.S. Mint is allowing everyone to share their input on how the coins should be designed. They urge the public to submit recommendations for any potential honorees through their web portal established by the National Women’s History Museum, which is open now!
Luckily in this instance, we won’t be waiting years to see this happen. #Roommates, we will only have to wait a few months to get our hands on the coins. The initial batch of coins will start circulating in January 2022. Hopefully, we can get that Harriett Tubman $20 bill next!
