The nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards have officially been released and there are some mixed reviews.
People are celebrating as the Netflix documentary “American Factory,” earned a nomination for Best Documentary. The nomination goes to the film’s producers Steven Bognar, Julia Reichert, and Jeff Reichert. Nonetheless, it is also an achievement for the Obama’s, since the film is the first release from their Higher Ground production company.
Obama took to social media to react to the news and said, “Oscar nominations came out today and I’m glad to see American Factory’s nod for Best Documentary. I like this film for its nuanced, honest portrayal of the way a changing global economy plays out in real lives. It offers a window into people as they actually are and it’s the kind of story we don’t see often enough. This is exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve through Higher Ground.”
Cynthia Erivo, who portrayed Harriet Tubman in the 2019 film “Harriet,” also earned two nominations. She earned nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Song, which brings her one step closer to becoming an EGOT winner.
There are also talks about a few people getting snubbed from this year’s show, including Lupita Nyong’o. Many people were upset to see that she did not get a nomination for her role’s in Jordan Peele’s box office hit “Us.” Many people expressed their disappointment, one person said, “Y’all love your black women in the key of slave narrative over there in Hollywood. Lupita was sitting right there playing 2 goddamn roles.”

Lupita worked overtime to give us TWO haunting and completely different performances as Red and Adelaide. When will the Academy start recognizing more than ONE actress of color? #OscarNoms #US pic.twitter.com/qXxrUUVQYO

It’s wild that when Jordan Peele cast Daniel Kaluuya as a lead in “Get Out,” he got Oscar nominations galore, but when he cast a Black woman lead— crickets from the Academy. They loved “Get Out,” but the fact that Lupita was no slave girl in “Us” must have burnt their biscuits! pic.twitter.com/XAecMWuEEQ
