The NYPD Police Union Endorses Trump: ‘We Need Your Strong Voice’

TSR Politics: If you didn’t think our public servants were supposed to get political, think again. The head of the largest New York Police Department union publicly endorses Donald Trump for president and Trump gleefully accepts, the New York Post reports.

“I cannot remember when we’ve ever endorsed for the president of the United States until now — that’s how important this is,” said Pat Lynch, the president of the New York City Police Benevolent Association at an event with Trump in his Bedminster club Friday night. “We need your strong voice across the country.”

The union did not endorse anyone in the 2016 presidential election but it seems now its decision to support Trump comes from his backing of law enforcement amid nationwide protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement as well as calls to end police brutality and social injustice.

“Mr. President, we’re fighting for our lives out there,” Lynch told Trump. “We don’t want this to spread to the rest of the country. We need your strong voice across the country to say ‘we have the support of law enforcement across this country.’”

Lynch, who has been vocal about his disapproval of New York City and the state passing laws that increase transparency around cops’ disciplinary records, went on to say Trump earned the rare endorsement.

Trump boasted about Lynch’s endorsement on Twitter.

“Today, it was my great honor to proudly accept the endorsement of the @NYTCPBA!” Trump tweeted. “I have deeply and profoundly admired the brave men and women of the #NYPD for my entire life. New York’s Finest are truly the best of the best — I will NEVER let you down! #MAGA.”

It will be interesting to see if other major police unions follow suit. We’ll keep you posted.
