‘The Hate U Give’ Screenwriter Audrey Wells Passes Away The Day Before The Film Is Released

Roommates, we are sending our prayers to the family and friends of Audrey Wells.

According to Rolling Stone, Wells passed away at the age of 58 on Thursday after battling cancer. Her passing happened the day before her latest film; “The Hate U Give” hit theaters.

A joint statement on the film’s official Twitter said, “We are simply heartbroken. Audrey’s was a voice of empowerment and courage, and her words will live on through the strong, determined female characters she brought to life. Our thoughts are with all of Audrey’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Wells adapted the 2017 novel “The Hate U Give,” by Angie Thomas. The film stars Amandla Stenberg and focuses on the aftermath of a police-involved shooting of an unarmed black man.

Wells’ husband, Brian Larky said in a statement, “Over the last five and half years, Audrey fought valiantly against her illness and she died surrounded by love. Even during her fight, she never stopped living, working or traveling, and she never lost her joy, wonder, and optimism. She was, simply, the most incredible wife and partner imaginable, and she knew always that she was loved by Tatiana, me, and the friends who were her chosen family.”

Wells previously wrote the scripts for the films “The Truth About Cats and Dogs,” “George of the Jungle,” “A Dog’s Purpose” and “Under the Tuscan Sun.” Wells’ animated film “Over The Moon,” is currently in production at Netflix.

We send our condolences to the family of Audrey Wells during this difficult time.
