Netflix’s original series “The Get Down,” has not been renewed for a second season.
According to Deadline, the decision to cancel the show came after the second part of season one premiered on Netflix last month.
The hip-hop themed show, set in the Bronx, NY during the 1970’s was one of Netflix’s most expensive shows, with the first 12 episodes costing them $120 million. The first half of season one premiered in August of 2016, and the second half premiered in April of this year.
The show was Baz Luhrmann’s first television series. There pre-production and production process were reportedly difficult, which resulted in the first season being divided into two parts.
Nonetheless, Luhrmann indicated that there was a second season in the works during an interview with Vulture last month. He said, “To be honest, we have already developed the opening of the next season. Sony and Netflix have been very driven about having a second season. There has been no question about that. They really want it.”
After the show’s cancellation, Luhrmann said in a Facebook post, “It kills me that I can’t split myself into two and make myself available to both productions… But the simple truth is, I make movies.”
The show placed the spotlight on some new actors in Hollywood such as Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, and Herizen Guardiola.
