The Brother of Kalief Browder Set To Run For Mayor In New York City

Akeem Browder, the brother to the late Kalief Browder recently announced his plans to run for mayor of New York City against current Mayor Bill de Blasio.

According to the New York Daily News, Browder believes that de Blasio doesn’t want to shut down Rikers Island. During his announcement, Browder announced that he would be running for mayor as a nominee of the Green Party.

Browder said, “We have a problem with the way New York is being run – especially by de Blasio. He knew that would get the people to cheer him. He doesn’t have a plan to shut it down.”

Browder also argued that his experiences are what help him relate to the everyday New Yorker. He said, “You can’t be far removed from the problem. What does running as a mayor include, talking fancy?”

He continued, “What it actually involves is knowing the people, and I’ve done that…I’ve marched in the streets with the people in every borough.”

Browder said his platform would also cater to, homelessness, schools, and taxpayer spending.

Earlier this year Spike premiered a six-part docu-series, which highlighted the story of Kalief Browder and his time spent on New York’s Riker’s Island, where he received unfair treatment from the guards and inmates.

The unfair treatment of the justice system later caused him to commit suicide at the age of 22.
