Although most Americans are working from home as they continue to self-quarantine, there are also those that have to continue to still leave their homes and go to work despite worldwide coronavirus outbreak. Well, Target is aiming to help its employees out financially by raising all employee pay, in addition to providing new jobs for thousands who may need it during such a stressful financial time.
Target employees have something to celebrate during such dark and financially uncertain times. The popular retail giant just announced that all workers in both stores and distribution centers will receive an immediate $2 raise to their existing salaries until at least May 2nd, as reported by the Atlanta Business Chronicle (@ATLBizEvents.)
The raise is part of a larger $300 million investment by Target that also includes its subsidiary company Shipt, which is now hiring thousands of workers in Atlanta, Miami, Minneapolis and Detroit. Naturally, the hiring increase is a direct response to the “unprecedented rise in demand” for the delivery of groceries and other household essentials as the country continues to self-quarantine.
Shipt is a shopping delivery service that hires shoppers to go to stores and pick up items for customers who place orders. Target bought Shipt for $550 million back in 2017, although the service also delivers for outside stores like CVS and Office Depot.
Target is also offering high-risk coronavirus employees, such as those who are pregnant or over 65, up to 30 days of paid leave. Meanwhile, bonuses of up to $1,500 to 20,000 will be given out to team leads at stores across the country.
Target CEO, Brian Cornell, said this of the new company decisions:
“With each passing day, it’s clearer how indispensable our team is to communities across the country as our guests cope with the coronavirus. Increasing their compensation for a job incredibly well done and ensuring continued compensation for those who need to care for themselves and their families is a reflection of our company’s values and simply the right thing to do.”
This is certainly great news for Target employees and shoppers.
Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
