Although the “Empire” series had already come to an end, earlier this year it was announced that a spinoff based on Taraji P. Henson’s character, Cookie Lyon, was in the works as she signed a first-look deal with 20th Century Fox TV. However, it looks like Cookie will not be making her return on Fox.
According to Deadline, Fox is decided not to proceed with the spinoff. However, Disney TV Studios’ 20th Television is currently in the process of shopping the spinoff around to other outlets, including ABC and Hulu.
Although this particular spinoff will not be going through at Fox, they are still remaining in business with the collaborators of the spinoff.
As previously reported, the Cookie Lyon spinoff was the first deal of business under Taraji’s first-look deal with 20th Century Fox. The project was set to run under her TPH Entertainment company, and it was announced that the series will be written, and executive produced by “Empire” co-creator Danny Strong.
Stacy Littlejohn and Yolonda Lawrence were announced as a part of the project as well, with Sanaa Hamri is set to direct the series.
At the time, Taraji spoke about her first-look deal and said, “I believe that normalizing stories around stigmatizing matters will make them more palatable for audiences to embrace. Art can change perception and I plan to develop projects that can help further the conversation. I also aim to help cultivate and establish new young talent and their stories because they are our future and deserve a voice and a platform to be heard. I’m so excited to have 20th, led by the talented Carolyn Cassidy, support me in this new endeavor!”
Taraji has also launched her own Facebook show, which talks about mental health.
