SZA is opening up about her brief romance with Drake while transparently sharing her thoughts on finding love in the future. As The Shade Room previously reported, the pair most recently teamed up for their first collaborative single, “Slime You Out,” released last month.
During an interview with Rolling Stone, conducted in August and published Tuesday, SZA reflected on her previous romances. The 33-year-old revealed that she was previously engaged for five years to a partner she was with for 11 years.
The “Broken Clocks” singer did not disclose the identity of her former fiancé but explained that he’s a fashion designer who doesn’t frequent social media. Additionally, the singer explained that they called off their engagement around 2017 or 2018.
“I hate being a long-term b***h,” the singer remarked to the outlet before reflecting on her more casual dating era.
At this point, SZA explained that she briefly dated Drake while “spending time in New York” in 2009. The singer was reportedly 19 while Drake was 22, and explained that the romance was “childish” and gave “youth vibes.”
“[We] were really young,” SZA explained to Rolling Stone. “It wasn’t hot and heavy or anything. It was like youth vibes. It was so childish.”
As the interview continued, SZA explained that when she was younger, she felt like she needed “constant validation” and “companionship” from her partners. Now, as the 33-year-old looks toward the future, she feels like she has “more to offer.”
“[I used to be] around a n***a, up under a n***a, trying to get up under a n***a, like, needing that constant validation, companionship, like scared to be by myself and s**t,” the singer explained. “I feel like I have more to offer than the way I look and my energy…”
The “Kill Bill” singer continued by explaining that she wants a partner who values her for her authentic self.
“I want to stunt like me when I meet the person I envision me being with,” the 33-year-old explained. “I envision them falling in love with me the way I am…”
According to PEOPLE, Drake initially revealed his and SZA’s brief romance on his 2020 single, “Mr. Right Now.” The song featured 21 Savage and Metro Boomin.
“Yeah, said she wanna f**k to some SZA, wait
‘Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08
If you cool with it, baby, she can still play
While I jump inside that box and have a field day…”
On October 4, 2020, SZA took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to add additional context to the rapper’s lyrics.
“So It was actually 2009 lol... in this case a year of poetic rap license mattered… lol I think he jus innocently rhymed 08 w wait . Anybody who really knows me and was around during this time can confirm.. it’s all love all peace…”
At the time, the “Snooze” singer explained that she shared the tweet to ensure that nobody believed “anything underage or creepy was happening.”
“I just didn’t want anybody thinking anything underage or creepy was happening . Completely innocent . Lifetimes ago .”
