Roommates, do y’all remember that crazy story from last year when a white college student named Abigail Fisher was rejected from attending the University of Texas? The young lady sued them and argued that she was unfairly denied admission to the school based on affirmative action policies that violated the Constitution’s equal protection clause which favors minority students with less than satisfactory grades.
During the time Fisher’s appeal was being evaluated, Justice Antonin Scalia commented, “Most of the black scientists in this country don’t come from schools like the University of Texas,” he said. “They come from lesser schools where they do not feel that they’re — that they’re being pushed ahead in — in classes that are too — too fast for them.” That’s when the #StayMadAbby hashtag was born as it celebrated black excellence despite these presumptions.
The reason why #BeckyWithTheBadGrades is trending now is because the Supreme Court just denied her appeal and the shade of it all is that in order for Fisher to have automatically been accepted to UT, all she had to do was place in the top 10% of her graduating class, which she did not do. Her grades, SAT and Personal Achievement Index (PAI) weren’t even impressive enough for her to be selected over other students.
In fact, according to USA Today, the university noted that even if Fisher had received a perfect PAI “–a score granted based on students’ essays, leadership, service and “special factors” such as race and socioeconomic status, her Academic Index (AI) score –a score granted based on students’ SAT scores, high school curriculum and class rank, Fisher still would not have “earned” an acceptance letter.” Oop!
USA Today reports, “Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote the majority opinion, explained that UT’s holistic admissions process remains constitutional.
#StayMadAbby!
