#Roommates, we all know at least one person who loves to return stuff to the store and get their money back. Well, did you know that stores like Best Buy, JCPenny and Victoria’s Secret are now keeping track of how many times you return your items?
According to ABC News, many stores are now flagging “serial returners” and banning them from the return counter. A company called The Retail Equation — whose clients reportedly include Best Buy, Home Depot, JC Penney, Victoria’s Secret, Nike, Bath and Body Works and Sephora — is keeping detailed reports in efforts to stop return fraud, which is reportedly a $10 billion problem each year.
Sources say stores ask for your driver’s license when making a return to enter your name into a national system. Even if you have a receipt and the item is unopened, the company will collect and hold that data.
“While it will not say how many returns will trigger a red flag on your name, consumer advocates warn you to be careful with returns everywhere,” ABC reports, adding “it does not share customer profiles with other stores, which means that too many returns to JC Penney should not get you banned at Best Buy.”
We’re just trying to keep y’all in the know, Roommates!
