It’s not new that artists on the innanet, independent or signed to major record labels, are finding major success on TikTok. It seems like during the pandemic, attention on the app has skyrocketed and helped many artists including Erica Banks, Coi Leray, and Mooski. It seems like every other day, there are new songs and dance challenges, and if you’re like me, it’s getting hard to keep up with all of them.
Soulja Boy, who many describe as the blueprint rapper to go viral, has been basking in his glory as his latest single ‘She Make It Clap’ has not only gone number one on TikTok, but on streaming platforms, Apple Music, and Spotify as well.
Soulja took to Twitter, letting off a series of tweets speaking on the big accomplishment as he is an independent artist. “I really freestyled ‘She Make It Clap’ on Twitch, then dropped it as a real song, and it went viral,” He wrote. “#1 on TikTok, and I got like 5 record deals from it. I’m goated, bro no Kizzy.”
It wouldn’t be Soulja if he didn’t flex a Lil while celebrating. He also called out rappers for trying to hop on the TikTok wave. Soulja tweeted, “And I see these rappers copying my TikTok wave. They think they slick. Y’all wasn’t doing this last month, lmao. I go #1, and here they come.” He continued mentioning that the song’s success was better than rappers signed to major labels with large marketing budgets.
What was most impressive about Soulja’s positive rant was that he opened the door to the always relevant conversation that artists have about staying independent and signing to a major label. The majority agree that staying independent is the wave because the artist can control their masters and avoid Anita Baker’s issues. She recently asked fans to stop streaming music until her gives her permission to own her masters.
Soulja even stepped into The Shade Room, asking fans what he should do. Roomies, what are y’alls thoughts?
