A viral video is making its rounds online of Sonya Curry defending her daughter-in-law, Ayesha Curry, and her newborn grandson amid an alleged confrontation with police in Paris.
According to Athlon Sports, Steph Curry was recently joined in Paris by his wife, Ayesha, and their 6-year-old son, Canon, and newborn son, Caius Chai.
On Saturday, Steph went viral after reportedly scoring four three-pointers during the final minutes of Team USA’s basketball final against France. Team USA’s victory scored them the Olympic gold medal, per the New York Post.
However, on Sunday, August 11, footage captured by The Hollywood Fix went viral on X, formerly known as Twitter. To date, the almost three-minute clip has garnered over 1 million views. Additionally, it appears to show Steph’s mother, Sonya, Ayesha, and their sons leaving Saturday’s event.
“Who touch a baby?” Sonya Curry can be heard screaming at a French police officer.
At that point, another officer walks over to Sonya in an apparent attempt to speak with her and seemingly calm her down. As the clip continues, multiple officers can be seen surrounding Ayesha, who appears to be standing with Caius strapped over her chest.
“You will not sleep well,” Sonya tells the initial officer before telling someone off-camera that they should be assisting her and Ayesha. “It’s a baby!”
The camera pans back to Ayesha, who can be seen wiping her eyes. Sonya then instructs Ayesha to follow her before telling the police, “Stop saying my name—how about help us? How about that?”
As Ayesha attempts to walk away, another officer blocks her path.
“We’re going here!” Sonya tells the officer, pointing her finger to her right.
At that point, an unknown man appears to intervene and asks Sonya, “Where’s your car?”
“It’s right there where all those people are on that side — we were over there… Look, they won’t let us go back over there where we came from. They won’t let the driver come here. And they won’t let us go back over there,” Sonya tells the man.
Per the New York Post, the man explains to Sonya that an important official was making their way through the area, halting traffic. The man can even be heard apologizing to Sonya, seemingly on the police officer’s behalf.
Around two minutes and thirty seconds into the clip, Stephen’s teammate Draymond Green appears behind the unknown. He seems to ask Sonya about what is happening.
“So even after him hitting the baby in the head, there’s nothing y’all can do to get them out of here?” Green then asks an officer.
Seconds later, the footage ends with another bystander seemingly telling the camera person that they are invading the family’s privacy.
According to the New York Post, it remains unclear how long Sonya and Ayesha’s interaction with the French police lasted before and after the clip. At this time, Sonya, Ayesha, and Steph have not publicly addressed the viral incident.
Meanwhile, users on X have taken to the platform to react to the ordeal.
Sonya Curry’s defense of her daughter-in-law and grandson comes as no surprise. As The Shade Room previously reported, Steph’s mother appeared alongside Shaquille O’Neal’s mother, Lucille, on ‘Sway In The Morning’ in June.
During her time on the show, Sonya shared that she had prayed about her children’s partners from the day they were born.
“Like literally every night, [I] prayed that God would bring a Godly woman or a Godly man into their lives,” she explained. “And he has not failed me yet.”
Sonya explained that she has two “beautiful daughter-in-laws” and a son-in-law, and she now views them as if they were her own children.
