The power of storytelling can create a movement and that’s exactly what #AvaDuVernay has done with the hit Netflix limited series, #WhenTheySeeUs.
Those who have watched the powerful series have been inspired to get justice for the men by attempting to take down the woman who infamously prosecuted them.
The real-life prosecutor #LindaFairstein has gone on to become a New York Times bestselling author for her crime novels and now social media users want retailers including #Amazon and #BarnesAndNoble to pull her books in light of the series.
A viral post with the title “Justice for the Central Park 5” is being shared by influencers and across social media, asking people to call their local bookstores and ask for Fairstein’s books to be removed.
The post says: “@lindafairstein went on to become a successful author after she coerced and convicted 5 innocent boys of a crime they did not commit. These boys sat in prison and lost their youth inside of a broken system! Call your local book stores and ask to remove this woman’s books off the shelves!”
The post has been shared by several celebrities including Yandy Smith and Jonathan from the “Love and Hip Hop” franchise.
Linda Fairstein appears to be active on social media and has not publicly addressed the criticism she’s received since the airing of the series or the social media boycott.
It also doesn’t appear that retailers have responded to the call for action.
Others are using the inspiration they received from the series as an opportunity to support nonprofits and other organizations working to free innocent people from the system.
Roommates, have you watched “When They See Us”? Let us know your thoughts!
