As many of you know, for many years the first Monday in May has always served as a special moment in the fashion community as the annual Met Gala is always scheduled to take place at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
However, as we previously reported, it was announced back in March that this year’s gala has been postponed due to the pandemic, which currently has New York City on lockdown.
Although today’s gala will not be going down, social media users took the opportunity to go down memory lane and talk about all of their favorite looks that have graced the Met Gala carpet, and also talk about which of their favorite celebrities that would have shut it down had the annual event had still taken place today.
As previously reported, Anna Wintour, the editor in chief of Vogue announced the news back in March and said, “Like everyone else, I have been experiencing this COVID-19 crisis as a series of hurtling developments, where one never knows quite what each new day will bring. Through it, all one fact, however, remains stubbornly unchanged: President Trump. I, like so many of us, have been appalled by how he has responded to the pandemic—the optimistic and fact-free assurances that all will be fine, the chaotic implementation of travel bans and claims about a ‘foreign virus,’ the narcissistic ease with which he has passed the blame to others, his dishonesty with the American people, and worst of all, his shocking lack of empathy and compassion for those who are suffering and fearful.”
She continued, “One day that will not arrive on a schedule will be the opening of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, ‘About Time.’ Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, ‘About Time,’ and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled. In the meantime, we will give you a preview of this extraordinary exhibition in our forthcoming May issue”
Swipe through to look back on some previous looks and tell us your favorite, and who you thought would have killed it on this year’s carpet.
