New Laws That Went Into Effect In California

The new laws address various issues that could significantly improve the lives of the Golden State’s citizens, including affordable housing and mandating date-rape drug testing kits. Additionally, there’s a bill to make repairing electronic devices yourself easier.

One of the bills that has social media buzzing requires service and travel businesses to include all surcharges in the advertised price. For example, concert fees, cleaning fees at short-term rental locations, and resort fees at hotels must show the cost upfront.  There’s also a bill that states landlords are forbidden from charging more than one month’s rent for a security deposit. Previously, renters could charge up to three times the rental amount.

Furthermore, nightclubs and bars in Cali will be required to sell or offer testing devices, strips, or stickers to test for date rape drugs. Moreover, Cali is the third U.S. state to pass The Right To Repair Act. This bill states that manufacturers must provide tools, documents, and parts to fix devices that cost $50 to $99 for at least three years after a product was made. The period extends to seven years, regardless of the warranty period when the item costs more than $100.
