There is no doubt that Simone Biles is definitely making her mark within gymnastics, as she currently holds the title for the most decorated gymnast in world championship history. However, she finds herself dealing with the concept of being in competition, even when she’s not doing gymnastics.
On Wednesday, Simone took to social media to release a statement denouncing beauty as a competition. According to Vogue, she is one of the Olympic athletes that have joined forces with beauty company SK-II for their #NoCompetition campaign, which was created to inspire women to live by their own definitions of beauty.
In her statement, Simone said, “In gymnastics, as in many other professions, there is a growing competition that has nothing to do with the performance itself. I’m talking about beauty. I don’t know why, but others feel as though they can define your own beauty based on their standards.”
She continued, “I’d be lying if I told you that what people say about my arms, my legs, my body…of how I look like in a dress, leotard, bathing suit or in casual pants has gotten me down at times.”
Simone continued to speak against turning beauty into a competition before she ended her statement with, “Beauty is #NoCompetition.”
