Should Racially-Motivated 911 Calls Be Considered A Hate Crime?

New York State Senator Jesse Hamilton is on a mission to make all of these petty and unnecessary police calls against black people stop. He’s pushing for a new law that would “criminalize 911 calls against people of color without evidence of malice” after a woman called the authorities on him for handing out campaign literature that was critical of the Trump administration.

“That’s gonna be a hate crime,” he told reporters. “This pattern of calling the police on black people going about their business and participating in the life of our country has to stop.”

According to Patch, the state senator wants to make a clear distinction between what it means to call the police when there is an actual threat vs when a person of color is perceived to be “threatening.” He wants to do this by strengthening our current laws that ban all of the #PermitPattys and #BBQBeckys of the world from giving false police reports.

Roommates, would you be here for this new law?
