This year, the late #Selena was posthumously rewarded with her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, honored with a Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum figurine and her sister helped to create a MAC cosmetics line in her name. Just weeks ago, the singer’s husband Chris announced that he had teamed up with Endemol Shine North America to produce a tv series based off of his 2012 book To Selena With Love. Now, it looks like there may not be a show, because Abraham Quintanilla has filed a lawsuit claiming that Perez is acting illegally.
According to Forbes, only Selena’s estate has the rights to her name and likeness “to author or authorize and commercially exploit a book, play, video, film, TV movie” about her life.” This means that Perez illegally published his book, because the lawsuit also states that Perez “expressly agreed that he would not exploit any of the Entertainment Properties in any manner or medium, including, without limitation, by way of a book, television series, movie, or any other motion picture medium.”
A source close to the production company told Forbes that Endemol Shine responded to the letter with “full denial to the claims” and stated that they are moving forward with the project!
This could get really messy later on…
