Saweetie just dropped a brand new project, Roomies, and she has been very open about how her creative process contributes to the success of her music. She recently spoke to multiple publications about ‘Pretty Summer Playlist: 1’, and found herself speaking on her use of popular hit songs as samples.
While speaking with Harpers Bazaar, Saweetie was asked how she felt about people making the assertion that she has no original sound, and she said samples are just what she does and she does them well! A lot of Saweetie’s biggest hits–‘Icy Girl’, ‘Tap In’, and ‘My Type’–sampled songs from the early 2000s and she said she has no intention of stopping there.
“I’m gonna sample for the rest of my life; it’s my specialty,” she said. “Tons of people sample, but my samples just get the most recognition. I think greatness makes people uncomfortable. and I think people try to come up with excuses to not like me and make themselves feel better about their life.”
Similarly, Saweetie spoke with USA Today and explained that she only gets hate for her samples because of how poppin’ they are!
“I know I get a lot of criticism, but I feel like it’s only because I do it really well when I release my most popular songs,” Saweetie said. “When ‘Pretty B*tch Music’ comes along, I do have some original beats that I’m so excited to share because I feel like it’ll not only be ‘Oh, Saweetie makes great sample songs,’ it’ll be ‘She makes great songs, period.'”
